Here is my 1st version. I went for a classic Roman typeface, using the red and green colors of Italy's flag. Italy and its cities all have images that define there location. Italy itself is known for its history and ancient structures which contain many domes and towers.
Tuscany: wine/nature
Venice: Gondolas/water
Rome: the Coliseum/ancient world
My current color combinations are just temporary, In following revisions I want to explore colors that are beyond the obvious. but then again, the obvious may just be necessary.
Here are some other explorations that are in progress
This time I chose a more rustic font. Also, I tried to explore more options for the imagery. However, I feel that Rome needs some re-thinking.

I really like your second set of sketches. They type fits really well. I know these are just sketches, but since Italy has so much art, maybe you want to keep it more "sketchy" looking? You know what I mean? I like the hand-drawn look about it.

I agree, the sketchy approach works much better. The font is just temporary, I think I may try to create the lettering from scratch.

I like the second set. it's really colorful, and it's more like Italy than the first set. but i also like the "venice" from the first sketch. good job!
I really like that you used more color in the second set but I do like the ideas of the first set. i think if you can somehow combine the to and use more of the color it would look pretty good. Good Job!

with all, it feels like the image dominates too much over the type. integrate the type more with the image. make them work together rather than two separate items.
i think you can extend your colors also. you are not confined to using two colors for all. maybe one color is repeated to unify, but give each one their own identity by varying the color.
i would attempt to abstract your icons more. they feel straight on, typical...
can we stylize to again give it a distinct look.
